August 15, 2008: "Alicia Keys: Fame Brings A Lot Of Emptiness"
Alicia Keys says her fame can make you "a ghost of yourself." The 27-year-old singer says her grueling tour schedule and long years of musical training have taken their toll on her life. Despite selling over 23 million albums and winning over 80 major awards - including 11 Grammys - Alicia says her fame has a huge downside. She told Britain's Daily Mail newspaper: "Fame can bring a lot of emptiness. You are so driven that you work 20 hours a day, you get four hours of sleep, you do all that for 10 years straight." "Then, all of a sudden, you think, 'I'm a singer and, yes, I'm a songwriter and, yes, I perform, but what else is in my life? Do I have a family? Am I growing inside? Am I always too busy to see my mother and the people I love?'" "You have to numb yourself because you are away so long. It can change you and that is not the type of person I want to be. People always want something from you - you become like a ghost of yourself or of the person you could be." Alicia says her soul searching began when she gave up work to look after her dying grandmother last year. She added: "Losing her made me realize how close I came to the edge. It took a while before I could even say the word 'grandmother' because I was so upset." Despite vowing to cut back on her workload, Alicia will release her latest single "Superwoman" on September 1. *** August 7, 2008: "Alicia Keys Belches On Stage During Performance" Alicia Keys couldn't stop belching after she ate just before going on stage. The 'No One' singer admits she learned her lesson from the incident and now makes sure she eats a few hours before she is required to perform. She said: "One time I ate right before going on stage and I had to hide my belches from the microphone - that was funny!" Alicia decided to partner with the drinks company after finding she couldn't stop drinking the unique-tasting beverages, adding: "I don't partner with anybody, but this really was natural for me because I've been a fan from the beginning." Jennifer Aniston and 50 Cent are among the celebrities who have previously lent their names to Vitamin Water. *** July 31, 2008: "Alicia Keys And Jack White To Sing 007 Theme" Alicia Keys and the White Stripes' Jack White will record the theme song to "Quantum of Solace," the 22nd James Bond film, which hits U.S. theaters Nov. 7. The song, "Another Way To Die," will be the first duet in Bond soundtrack history. White wrote and produced the song, and also will play drums. The soundtrack to the movie will be released Oct. 28. The score for the film will be composed by David Arnold. "Quantum of Solace," starring Daniel Craig, will be directed by Marc Forster from a screenplay by Neal Purvis & Robert Wade and Paul Haggis. Amy Winehouse and Leona Lewis had previously been rumored as the vocalists for the latest Bond theme. *** July 15, 2008: "Alicia Keys Says Music Saved Her From A Troubled Youth" Alicia Keys says music saved her from a troubled youth. The 'No One' singer grew up in the tough Hell's Kitchen district of New York and revealed her single mother Terri Augello sent her to dance and music lessons to keep her off the streets. She said: "It was the best thing she ever did for me. I'd go and hang out with my friends, but would only do it for 45 minutes as I had to get to my next class. My extracurricular lessons gave me a real sense of focus and drive and they helped to keep me out of trouble." The 27-year-old singer has also spoken openly again about carrying a knife for protection when she was a teenager. She added to Britain's Sunday Times News Review magazine: "Gang culture was everywhere and there were altercations all the time. You'd often find yourself in situations where you wished you had something more than just your hands. So I would carry around a little shank, a home made knife. The E! Network’s Marc Malkin is the reportedly the source of the news saying that an “insider” tipped him off. “I believe Alicia is the winner,” he said. Although the info is being widely reported, the “powers that be” have yet to confirm the good news. According to reports, Alicia’s reps refuse to issue any comment and the movie’s spokesperson is quoted as saying that they still have “no info” on the theme song for the film. *** April 14, 2008: "Alicia Keys Says The US Government Invented ‘Gangsta Rap’ To Convince Black People To Kill Each Other" Alicia Keys has reportedly claimed that the US government invented ‘gangsta rap’ in a bid to convince black people to kill each other. Alicia expressed her conspiracy theories during a recent interview for blender magazine. She said ‘Gangsta Rap’ didn’t exist, and that the violent hip-hop style was an anti-black conspiracy. Alicia apparently believes the government encouraged the murders of rappers Tupac, and Notorious B.I.G. She told Blender magazine, “The murders were fueled to stop a great black leader from existing.” Lately Alicia has reportedly been reading several Black Panther autobiographies, and she now wears a gold AK-47 pendant around her neck “to symbolize strength, power and killing ‘em dead.” However Alicia’s mother said, “She wears what? Alicia Keys biography (bio): Alicia Keys is an American R&B and soul singer, songwriter, pianist, record producer, actress, philanthropist, and author who has sold over twenty million albums worldwide and has won numerous awards, including nine Grammy Awards, eleven Billboard Music Awards, and three American Music Awards. Early life: Keys is the only child born to an Irish-Italian mother, Teresa "Terri" Augello (a paralegal and part-time actress), and a Jamaican father, Craig Cook (a flight attendant), in the Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City, New York. Keys' parents separated during her early childhood, and she was subsequently raised by her mother during her formative years in Hell's Kitchen, also in Manhattan. In 1985, Keys and a group of other girls played the parts of Rudy Huxtable's sleepover guests in an episode of The Cosby Show called "Slumber Party". She began playing the piano when she was seven, learning classical music by composers such as Beethoven, Mozart, and her favorite, Chopin. Known simply as Unplugged, the album peaked at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart with 196,000 units sold in its first week of release. The debut of Keys' Unplugged was the highest debut for an MTV Unplugged album since Nirvana's 1994 MTV Unplugged in New York and the first Unplugged by a female artist to debut at number one. As I Am (2007): Since late 2006, Keys has been working on her third studio album, As I Am—as confirmed in a red-carpet interview at the 2007 BET Awards on June 26[12]—, which is due out on November 13, 2007. Keys has talked to MTV about her upcoming album: "It's coming together incredibly. I am in love with this album. It's very fresh and new". The album is said to feature John Mayer on two songs—"Lesson Learned" and "Heavy Times". Linda Perry and Marsha Ambrosius of Floetry will also collaborate with Keys. Song titles revealed so far have been "No One" (the album's lead single), "Superwoman", "Savior", "Reckless", "Kiss Me Like You'll Never See Me Again", "Sweet Tooth", and "The Thing About Love". "No One" debuted at number seventy-one on the Billboard Hot 100, and has since made a huge jump, peaking at number fifteen in its second week as of September 29, 2007. Rolling Stone magazine reported in December 2005 that Keys and her long-term songwriting partner Kerry "Krucial" Brothers would start working seriously on Keys' third studio album in the later half of 2006. Keys and her long-term manager Jeff Robinson have signed a first-look film production deal to develop live-action and animated projects with Disney, Variety reports. Their first film, a remake of the 1958 comedy Bell, Book and Candle, will star Keys as a witch who casts a love spell to lure a rival's fiance. Keys and Robinson have also formed a television production company called Big Pita. Their first project will be a CW Network TV series inspired by Keys' experiences as a biracial child growing up in New York, similar to the network's Everybody Hates Chris. Keys has been tapped to executively produce an upcoming TV drama. The title and airing date are presently unconfirmed. Keys and Robinson said they will develop live-action and animated projects at their company, Big Pita, Little Pita, with Keys participating as producer, thesp, banner spearheading soundtrack, and music supervision. She also played a voice in the "Mission to Mars" episode of The Backyardigans. Keys will also play 1940s biracial piano child prodigy Philippa Schuyler in an upcoming film entitled Composition in Black and White. It is based on the 1995 biographical book of the same name by Kathryn Talalay and follows the story of Philippa Schuyler. "The challenge, in order to actually be able to play classical piano as a woman of mixed race, was by far more than I could ever imagine", Keys said. "That's what intrigued me about that role". The biopic will tell the difficult tale of Schuyler's controversial career, love-hate relationship with her mother, and the black community, her second career as a writer, and her eventual death in a helicopter accident. "Her story is very deep, even up to the point where the relationship between her and her mother gets very strained and she chooses to go to Europe and pass as a Spanish woman in order to be able to play, in order to be able to live a more normal life", Keys said, adding that she and Halle Berry hope to start shooting in early 2008. "As of right now, we're still in the first, second draft of the script", she said. "So a little bit of time—at least a year". Philanthropy: Besides being a musician, Keys is also an active philanthropist. She is a spokeswoman for Keep a Child Alive, a non-profit organization that provides life-saving AIDS medicines directly to children and families with HIV/AIDS in Africa. Keys and U2 lead singer Bono recorded a cover version of Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush's "Don't Give Up", in recognition of World AIDS Day 2006. Keys and Bono's version of the song has been retitled as "Don't Give Up (Africa)", to show the two musicians' support for helping to raise awareness of people living with HIV and AIDS and acknowledging the twenty-five million Africans (forty million people worldwide) living with the disease. Cingular Wireless announced the debut of an exclusive Music Tone ringtone available only through the Cingular Sounds music program. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the ringtone sales will go to Keep a Child Alive. Keys has visited African countries such as Uganda, Kenya, and South Africa to promote care for children affected by AIDS. Keys, the global ambassador and co-founder of Keep a Child Alive, jet in on a four-day working visit in Masaka, Uganda on April 10, 2006 to bolster the HIV/AIDS crusade and give a ray of hope to families and children devastated by the scourge. Keys visited sites funded by the organization "and brought footage home to the American public to encourage them to do more to help", according to a KACA statement. Throughout her visit, a film crew followed and documented the progress at both of these facilities for American news outlets. Keys is also a spokewoman for Frum tha Ground Up, a charity devoted to inspiring, encouraging, and motivating American youths to achieve success on all levels. Keys also participated in other humanitarian efforts in 2005 by performing at several exclusive concerts and television shows. On July 2, Keys performed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as part of the worldwide Live 8 concerts. The mission of the concerts was to raise awareness of the on-going poverty in Africa and to pressure the G8 leaders to take action by doubling aid, canceling debt, and delivering trade justice for Africa. In August 2005, Keys performed on ReAct Now: Music & Relief, a benefit program shown on music video channels to raise money for those affected by Hurricane Katrina. The following month, Keys performed at Shelter from the Storm: A Concert for the Gulf Coast, another Hurricane Katrina benefit concert. Keys is an honorary member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. On July 7, 2007, Keys and Keith Urban performed The Rolling Stones' 1969 hit "Gimme Shelter" at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey at the American leg of the Live Earth concerts.
